Day Trip or Overnight Stay in San Blas: Which Should You Choose?

Choose a day trip if you have only one free day on your Panama trip; choose an overnight stay if you want to see the sunset, sleep under a genuinely dark sky, and share dinner with the Guna community — the real difference isn't price, it's time.

The day trip: maximum efficiency

A day trip gives you the essentials of San Blas in a single day: transport, one or more islands, snorkeling, and lunch, departing from and returning to Panama City the same day. It's the right call if your Panama itinerary is short or if San Blas is just one stop among several.

The overnight stay: the full experience

Sleeping in San Blas completely changes the experience. Once the day-trip boats leave, the islands empty out — you get a sunset with no one else around, a genuinely dark starlit sky, and a shared dinner with the host community. Our cabins range from a shared island hostel to a private overwater cabin.

What stays the same either way

The community tax ($22/$7) and the 4x4 ride are identical either way. The price difference between a day trip and an extra night is usually smaller than people assume, because transport is already covered regardless.

If you're still not sure

If you're having trouble deciding, the San Blas Tours Panama overnight stays guide breaks down the different cabin types available in detail.
