Why this particular road causes motion sickness
The final stretch to San Blas crosses the San Blas mountain range on a winding road with tight curves and steep descents — exactly the combination that triggers motion sickness even in people who don't normally get it on flat highways.
Before you leave
- Take your motion-sickness medication with enough lead time (30-60 minutes before), not once you already feel unwell.
- Eat something light — not on an empty stomach, but not heavy either.
- Sleep well the night before; fatigue makes motion sickness worse.
During the ride
- Look forward toward the horizon rather than the side scenery.
- Avoid reading or using your phone during the curves.
- If you can choose your seat, the front rows tend to feel it less than the back.
- Crack a window if you can.
The good news
Once you reach the port and get on the boat, the road-induced motion sickness fades fast — the waters of Guna Yala are usually calm most of the year, and the boat ride to the islands is short.
