The Guna Yala Region Tax: How Much It Is and Why It Is Paid

If you’re planning your trip to San Blas, you’ll always see the same note: the regional tax is not included. Here we explain what it is, how much it costs, and why it exists—with complete transparency.

How Much It Costs

  • Foreigners: $22 per person.
  • Panamanians and residents: $7 per person.
  • Children ages 0–9: exempt.

It’s paid in cash upon entering the region (at the port), directly to the Guna authorities. That’s why no reputable tour operator includes it in their price: it’s not a fee we charge.

Why is it paid?

San Blas isn’t a national park: it’s autonomous territory of the Guna people, who have been managing their islands independently for a century. The fee supports local communities: schools, healthcare, and the upkeep of the islands you’ll be enjoying.

Seen this way, it’s the best $22 you’ll spend on your trip: it keeps this paradise a paradise and in the hands of its people.

Practical Tip

Bring the exact amount in small bills, separate from the cash you’ll need for extras. Payment is quick, and your guide will let you know when it’s time to pay.

Our tour costs $135 all-inclusive + this fee—no other surprises. Book here.

🐷 Reserve your spot with a deposit

You don't have to pay the full amount today: you can book with a deposit and pay the rest on the day of the tour, once you're in San Blas.
