What Is the Route Like from Panama City to San Blas?

The tour begins long before you reach the first island: the journey to San Blas is an adventure in itself. That’s right, kilometer by kilometer.

1. Pickup at your hotel (5:00–5:45 AM)

Our 4x4 will pick you up at your hotel, hostel, or Airbnb in Panama City. We leave early for a reason: to cross the mountains before traffic picks up and arrive at the islands with the whole day ahead of us.

2. The Road to the Region (~2.5 hours)

The first half is a regular highway. The second half—the Guna Yala highway—is where the trip gets interesting: twists and turns, uphill and downhill stretches through the rainforest. A 4x4 is required; that’s why you won’t see any tour buses on this route.

Tip: If you get motion sickness easily, take a pill before you leave and sit in the front. There’s a stop halfway to stretch your legs.

3. The Port of Cartí

Upon arrival, you’ll pay the regional tax ($22 for foreigners / $7 for locals, in cash) and put on your life jacket. From here on, it’s all turquoise water.

4. The Boat Ride (20–40 minutes)

The first view of the islands—palm trees floating on the horizon—is the moment when everyone pulls out their phones. Welcome to San Blas.
