7 Common Mistakes When Visiting San Blas (and How to Avoid Them)

After helping thousands of travelers, we’ve seen the same mistakes over and over again. Avoid them, and your day will be perfect from start to finish.

1. Forgetting your original passport

Mistake #1. The Guna Yala region requires the original document—a photo of your passport on your phone won’t get you in. Have it ready the night before.

2. Not bringing cash

There are no ATMs in San Blas. Without cash, you can’t pay the region’s tax ($22/$7) or buy a cold coconut. Bring $40–60 per person in small bills.

3. Skipping Your Motion Sickness Pill

The road has about 40 minutes of twists and turns. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take it before you leave—by the time you’re halfway there, it’s already too late.

4. Staying up late the night before

Pickup is at 5:00 AM. With only 4–5 hours of sleep, you’ll only get half the enjoyment out of paradise.

5. Leaving your phone to chance

Between the boat, sand, and water… use a waterproof bag. The photos are the only thing you’ll take home.

6. Poor-quality sunscreen (or none at all)

The Caribbean sun at midday is unforgiving, and the reflection off the water doubles its intensity. Reapply after every dip.

7. Booking with just anyone on the street

$99 deals that end up costing $180 at the port. Book directly with the tour operator, with a deposit and clear terms.
