10 San Blas Day Trip Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

The mistakes that ruin a San Blas day trip are nearly always the same: reaching the checkpoint without a passport, arriving with no cash on islands without card machines, getting burned before lunch, getting carsick on the mountain road, and booking dinner for 6 PM when you’re back at your hotel between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. Every one of them can be fixed the night before.

1. Forgetting your passport

Guna Yala is an autonomous indigenous territory (a comarca) with its own entry checkpoint, and foreigners are asked for their passport. Don’t count on a photo on your phone getting you through. Put it with tomorrow’s clothes before you go to bed: nobody thinks clearly at 5:00 AM.

2. Counting on ATMs, cards and wifi

There are no ATMs on the islands, mobile signal comes and goes, and there’s no wifi worth counting on. The comarca tax ($22 for foreigners, $7 for Panamanians and residents, children 0–9 exempt) isn’t part of the tour price and is paid separately the same day, in cash or by card to the driver. 3. Putting on sunscreen too late

Glare off the water and the white sand multiplies the sun. The classic mistake is waiting until the first island to put cream on, after you’ve already spent a while on an open boat. Apply it at the hotel, reapply after every swim, and don’t forget the back of your neck and the tops of your feet, which burn fastest while you snorkel face-down.

4. Not preparing for motion sickness

It’s about 2 h 30 of winding mountain road to the port of Cartí, then a boat. If you’re prone to it, take the pill before you get in the 4x4, not once you already feel queasy. 5. Booking with a reseller who adds extras

A cheap price on the street or in a social media group can grow at the port: transport that wasn’t included, lunch charged separately, a ride back that was “a different service.” Ask for what’s included in writing; booking direct or through a reseller has the full list of what to check. 6. Expecting a fixed list of islands

The route can change on the day because of weather or sea conditions. The captain decides, and if an island gets skipped it’s replaced with a similar one. Fixating on one particular photo is the fastest way to spend the day annoyed in a beautiful place.

7. Touching or lifting starfish

At the Piscina Natural, the last swim of the day at around 3:30 PM, the water is clear and shallow and you can see starfish from the edge. Lifting them out for a photo harms them. Look, photograph them underwater, and leave them where they are.

8. Overpacking

The boat has a sun canopy but no toilet (the toilets are on the islands), and between spray and sand, anything unprotected ends up wet. 9. Giving a vague hotel address

Pickup is around 5:00 AM, while it’s still dark. A hotel whose name sounds like another one, or an apartment with no number, costs the driver minutes and delays the whole group. 10. Booking dinner too early

You’re back at your hotel between 6:00 and 7:30 PM, depending on traffic. A 6:30 PM reservation is a gamble. Book for 8:30 PM or later, or keep the evening free: after a day of sun and sea, most people just want a shower and bed.
