Trips to San Blas from Panama City

A trip to San Blas comes down to five things: how many days, which format, which month, how much cash you carry and where you set off from. Most people settle it with a full day from Panama City — leaving around 5:00 AM, back at sunset, from $114 per person all in — and those with more time stay a night or two on an island.

This page is the whole guide. If you already know what you want, skip straight to the prices or the calendar: both are below.

The five decisions, in order

They are ordered by what constrains what. The first one changes the entire budget; the last one is settled the night before.

  1. 1 One day, or are you staying the night? This is the decision that rules the rest. A full day costs from $114 and has you back in Panama City that night. Staying over costs more, but it removes the two worst hours of the day — arriving and leaving — and gives you the sunset and the sunrise, which is what people remember.
  2. 2 Which route? It changes how many islands you see and whether you visit a Guna community. They run from $114 to $149 per person, and the transport, the lunch and the guide are the same on all of them. If it is your first time, the three-island route with the Natural Pool covers what people come to see.
  3. 3 Which month? You can go all year: 28–30 °C in January and in August alike. December to April is sunnier and busier; May to November brings hard, short rain, almost always before dawn, and much quieter islands. The only thing that cancels a tour is a rough sea.
  4. 4 How much cash? The comarca entrance fee ($22 per foreign visitor and $7 per resident) can be paid by card to the driver; in cash, bring some loose change for molas, drinks and tips. There are no ATMs or card machines on the islands, and the last cash machine is in Panama City.
  5. 5 Where are you setting off from? We pick you up at your hotel in Panama City around 5:00 AM. If you land in Panama the day before via Tocumen, plan on sleeping a night in the city: going straight from the airport to a five-in-the-morning departure ends badly.

What a trip to San Blas actually costs

With the numbers and no small print. This is what one person pays for a full day.

Item How much Paid to
The tour (4x4, boat, lunch and guide) from $114 To us, on the website
Comarca entrance fee $22 foreign / $7 resident To the driver, in cash or by card; it goes to the Guna community
Molas, drinks or souvenirs as much as you like On the island, cash only
Tips optional To the guide and the captain

There is nothing else. If you see a lower price somewhere, check whether it includes the transfer from Panama City: it is two and a half hours of 4x4 on mountain road, and it is the expensive part.

Pick a date and travellers and see the real availability. Free cancellation up to 72 hours before, so holding a spot early does not commit you.

Four mistakes that ruin the trip

Arriving without cash

You go without molas, drinks or tips: there are no ATMs or card machines on the islands, and none on that road either. The fee, on the other hand, can be paid by card to the driver.

Booking the day you land

Pickup is at five in the morning. With a flight landing at night and no sleep, the day on the islands is spent asleep in the boat.

Bringing a suitcase

On a day trip everything fits in a small backpack. Space in the boat is shared and everything gets wet.

Expecting a resort

San Blas is an indigenous comarca, not a hotel destination. Electricity for a few hours a day, rationed water and no signal. People who arrive knowing that have a great time; people who do not are disappointed.

Questions about travelling to San Blas

How much does a trip to San Blas from Panama City cost?

From $114 per person for the full day, with door-to-door 4x4, the boat, lunch and the guide. The comarca fee is separate: $22 per foreign visitor and $7 per resident, once, in cash or by card to the driver.

How many days do I need?

One day is enough to see the colour of the water and understand why people talk about San Blas. A night in the middle changes the trip: you keep the sunset and the sunrise, which is when the island empties out. More than two nights only pays off if you want to reach the far cays.

Can I go on my own?

You can, but you have to sort out a 4x4 — ordinary cars do not make the last stretch — the comarca entrance payment, and a boat to take you out and bring you back. It works out at a similar price with more things that can go wrong.

Is it safe?

Yes. The comarca is one of the calmest parts of Panama: small communities where everyone knows each other. The real risks are the sun, dehydration and the sea, not the people.

Travelling with children?

Yes, and it is one of the destinations where they have the best time: water without waves, and sand. Child-size life jackets are on the boat. Under-10s do not pay the comarca fee, and there is a reduced price on the tour.

What are the requirements to enter San Blas? Do I need a passport, a visa or a vaccine?

No vaccine is compulsory and no visa is needed: San Blas is not an international border, it is Panama. The only requirement is carrying your ID or passport for the comarca checkpoint. Without ID you do not get through, even if the tour is paid for.

What happens if the sea is rough?

If the port authority closes the port, no boat goes out, and then you either change the date or get a full refund. It is the only thing that cancels a trip; rain on its own does not.
