Best Day of the Week for a San Blas Day Trip
The San Blas day trip runs every day of the week on the same schedule: hotel pickup around 5:00 AM and back at your hotel between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. What changes is the crowd. On Saturdays, Sundays and Panamanian holidays, many local visitors head to the islands closest to the port of Cartí and seats fill up sooner. Weekdays are usually quieter.
What actually changes between a Tuesday and a Saturday?
The tour itself doesn’t change at all. The 4x4, the boat, lunch, the Piscina Natural and the Guna community guide are the same any day. The sea doesn’t follow a calendar either: if there’s swell, there’s swell on a Wednesday just as on a Sunday, and the captain adjusts the route that same morning.
What does change is the atmosphere:
| Weekdays | Weekends and holidays | |
|---|---|---|
| Visitors on the nearest islands | Usually fewer | More Panamanian groups, especially at the famous stops |
| Seats available | More room to book | Sell out sooner |
| Atmosphere | Calmer, more space on the sand | Livelier, with groups and families |
| Tour schedule | Same | Same |
Why weekends get busier
San Blas isn’t only a destination for international travelers. For plenty of people in Panama City it’s the Saturday or Sunday beach plan, and on long holiday weekends it’s one of the favorite getaways.
Local visitors tend to go to the islands nearest Cartí and to the best-known ones. At stops like the shipwreck at Isla Perro Chico, which is already the main draw on any given day, sharing the spot with several boats at mid-morning on a Saturday is normal.
It’s not a safety or quality issue. It’s a matter of taste: some people love the buzz, and some came for the empty-island photo.
Why go on a weekday
- More peace and quiet on the sand and in the water, especially on the famous islands.
- Easier to book at short notice outside the high season.
- Better photos without people in the background, if that matters to you.
- A slower pace at the lunch and swim stops.
The downside is obvious: if you work or study, a Tuesday isn’t always possible. And weekdays don’t guarantee empty islands: in high season, December to April, there’s movement every day. More on the months in when to do the San Blas day trip.
If a weekend is your only option
It’s still a great plan; you just need to choose smartly:
- Book early. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are the first dates to fill. How the deposit works and how long you can cancel for free is covered in how to book the day trip.
- Consider a route away from the most famous stops. The Relaxing Day Trip to Isla Aroma visits three peaceful cays, and the Cayos Holandeses day tour heads to the most remote cays in the comarca. They’re the two routes in our catalog that get furthest from the crowds.
- If Isla Perro Chico is a must for you, go anyway, knowing you’ll share it on a weekend. The routes that stop at Isla Perro Chico help you pick one.
Panamanian holidays
Long holiday weekends work like a supersized Saturday. The ones you notice most are Carnival, Easter week, the national holidays in November, Christmas and New Year. On those dates local travelers join the international ones, and seats run out faster than at any other time of year.
If your dates land on one of them, don’t rule it out: book as soon as your trip is set and pick the route with the atmosphere you’re after in mind.
Which day of the week do we recommend?
It depends on what you’re looking for:
- Calm and photos without crowds: any day from Monday to Thursday.
- Energy and a lively vibe: Saturday or Sunday, no problem.
- A short trip to Panama: whichever day fits your flights best, never the same day as a departing flight, because you’re back at your hotel between 6:00 and 7:30 PM.

Frequently asked questions
Does the San Blas day trip run every day? Yes, Monday to Sunday, on the same schedule: pickup around 5:00 AM at your hotel in Panama City and back between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. It’s only called off if the sea makes the crossing unsafe.
Is San Blas busier on weekends? Yes, especially on the islands near Cartí and at the best-known stops, because many Panamanian visitors join in. Weekdays are usually quieter, except in high season.
Does the price change on weekends? No. Each route costs the same any day of the week; what changes is availability, which runs out sooner on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Which route should I pick if I can only go on a Saturday? If you want calm, a route that stays away from the most famous stops, such as the Isla Aroma or Cayos Holandeses trips. If you don’t mind sharing the island, any route works.
How far ahead should I book for a holiday? As soon as your travel dates are set. Since you can cancel for free up to 72 hours before, booking early doesn’t lock you in.
