San Blas Day Trip with Kids: Ages, Carsickness, Packing
Yes, a San Blas day trip works with kids, but it’s a long day: hotel pickup around 5:00 AM, about 2 h 30 of winding road, a boat between islands, and back at your hotel between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. Children aged 0–9 don’t pay the comarca tax, and everyone on the boat wears a life jacket.
What age does it make sense from?
We’ll be straight with you: there’s no minimum age, but door to door the day runs 13 to 14 and a half hours. For a child, the hard part is the early start and the car, far more than the sea. Here’s how it usually goes:

Babies ride on a lap, not in a seat
On the boat, babies ride on their parents’ laps and don’t take a seat. If you need a car seat for the 4x4 leg, ask us when you book and we’ll tell you how we handle it for your date. Bring swim diapers, and remember the boat has no toilet: the toilets are on the islands.
The tax and what kids pay
The Guna Yala comarca tax isn’t included in the tour price and is paid separately on the day, in cash or by card to the driver: $22 per foreigner and $7 per Panamanian or resident. Children 0–9 are exempt. For what the tour itself costs by age, check prices or ask us when booking.
Safety in the water
- Life jackets on the boat: included, and worn on every crossing between islands.
- The Piscina Natural: shallow, crystal-clear water and the kids’ favorite stop. Even so, a small child won’t always touch bottom: life jacket or floaties, and an adult within arm’s reach.
- Snorkel and kayak: the gear is on the islands. For little ones, stick to the shoreline with an adult.
Shade: less than you’d think
The small cays have a few palm trees and not much else, and by midday the shade fills up fast. The boat has a sun canopy, but glare off the water still reaches you. Motion sickness: the road is the hard part

What to pack for kids
- Snacks and water for the road: at 5:00 AM many hotels aren’t serving breakfast yet.
- A full change of clothes and a towel each.
- Arm floats for small children, on top of the life jacket.
- Water shoes for the sand and bits of coral.
- A dry bag for your phone and documents.
- Something quiet for the ride back: plenty of kids fall asleep in the 4x4.

Which route works best for families
With young kids, less is more: fewer stops means less getting on and off the boat and more time playing in one spot. The Oferta Escapada 2-island trip covers two islands plus the Piscina Natural and is usually the best fit. If you’d rather set the pace yourself, stopping when your little one is tired or stretching out a swim, a private tour gives you that flexibility. Keep in mind the route can change on the day because of weather: the captain decides, and a skipped island is swapped for a similar one.
Lunch is served on an island: fish or chicken with rice and patacones, plus one drink. Chicken and rice tends to win over the pickiest eaters.
