Cultural Day Trip: Guanidup and the Guna People

Guna Cabins: Living Culture and an Emerald-Colored Inland Lagoon.

$135 /person 🐷 Today you only pay a deposit—the rest is due on the day of the tour + regional tax (payable on site)
Description

More than beaches: this tour brings you close to the living culture of the Guna people. You visit Isla Guanidup and Naranjo Chico, islands with traditional cabins where you see how the community lives, their molas — the Guna textile art known worldwide — and their daily relationship with the sea. Isla Yanis completes the route with its inland lagoon.

Guna Yala is autonomous territory and these islands are inhabited: this is not a set built for tourism, it is people at home. That changes the tone of the day — you walk, you talk, you buy molas directly from the women who sew them — and it also calls for care with photographs, which the guide explains before you step ashore. First stop at 8:30 and the Natural Pool at 15:30.

The 4x4 collects you at your hotel from 5:00 am and climbs into the comarca, roughly two and a half hours of mountain road. Boat with life jackets, island lunch and local guide are all in the price; the comarca entrance fee is not, and is settled that day in cash or by card to the driver.

Great if you want to understand where you are rather than only photograph it, and to buy molas from the person who made them.

Maybe not your tour if your plan is an empty beach and nobody to talk to.

⚠️ About Today's Route: The route and islands listed are the planned itinerary: on the day of the tour, they may vary due to weather, sea conditions, tides, or regulations set by the Guna Yala region. The captain and the boat guide have the final say, always prioritizing your safety—if an island cannot be visited, it will be replaced by another equally beautiful one.

If you need to cancel

With 72 hours or more of notice you get 100 % of the deposit back, or you change the date at no cost. Inside those 72 hours the deposit is no longer refundable, because by then your seat in the 4x4 and the boat is held and nobody else can use it; even so, if you tell us, we try to reschedule. And if we are the ones who cancel, which only happens for real sea safety, you choose between another date at no cost or 100 % of what you paid.

Questions about this tour

How much does Cultural Day Trip: Guanidup and the Guna People cost?

$135 per person, with the door-to-door 4x4, the boat, lunch and the guide included. The comarca entrance fee is paid separately, once: $22 for foreigners and $7 for residents, in cash.

Which islands does it visit?

3: Isla Guanidup, Naranjo Chico, Isla Yanis. The order is set by the tide and the sea that day, not by a fixed schedule.

What time is pickup and when do I get back?

Pickup at your Panama City hotel is around 5:00 am, and you are back in the city late in the afternoon. The early start is set by the mountain crossing and the tide, not by preference.

Are the islands on this route inhabited?

Guanidup and Naranjo Chico have traditional cabins with people living in them. Nothing is staged for the visitor: you walk, you talk, and you ask before taking a photograph.

Can molas be bought along the way?

Yes, from the women who sew them, with nobody in between. Bring small notes, because cards do not work in the comarca. Isla Yanis closes the day with its inland lagoon.

What does not depend on this tour — your ID, the comarca fee, route changes forced by the sea — is answered in one place instead of on every tour page. See all the frequently asked questions →
