How Many Islands Do You Visit in San Blas in One Day?

It is the first question almost everyone asks before booking, and it has a concrete answer: between two and four islands, depending on the package. But the number on its own is misleading, so it is worth understanding where it comes from.

The short answer, by package

Escape Day Trip ($114): 2 islands + the Natural Pool
Classic Day Trip ($135): 3 islands + the Natural Pool
VIP Day Trip ($149): 4 islands + the Natural Pool + a visit to a Guna community

The Natural Pool is included in all three, and it does not count as an island because it is not one: it is a sandbank in the middle of the sea where the water comes up to your waist.

Why not more

We could fit six islands into the itinerary. It would be worse, and here is why.

The day has a fixed length: you leave the hotel at 5am and get back between 5 and 7pm. Of those fourteen hours, about five go on the road (there and back on the Llano-Cartí) and another long hour at the checkpoint and the port. What is left for the islands is roughly five or six hours.

Now divide that up. Between islands there are ten to twenty-five minutes by boat, plus the time for the whole group to get on and off. Each hop costs close to half an hour in total.

With three islands, you spend an hour and a half to two hours on each: real time to swim, snorkel, eat lunch without rushing and lie down for a while. With six islands you would get forty minutes each and the day becomes a parade of quick photos.

How long you actually spend on each island

A typical Classic Day Trip:

Lunch is served on one of the islands, not on the boat, which is why that stop is the longest.

Can you choose which islands?

Partly. Each tour has an assigned area — Cartí, Chichime, Coco Bandero, Cayos Limones — and within that area the guide picks the specific islands on the day, based on the sea, the wind and how many people are already on each one.

That is not improvisation: it is what stops you ending up on an island with uncomfortable swell or with four other groups on top of you. If a particular island matters to you, tell us when booking and we will be straight about the odds of including it.

A better question than “how many islands?”

If we had to pick one question to help you decide, it would not be the number of islands. It would be this: what do you want to do with your day?

Want to swim and snorkel without watching the clock? The 3-island Classic is plenty.
On a tight budget and happy just to taste it? The 2-island Escape does the job.
Want to meet the Guna people and not only see their beaches? Then the VIP, which adds the community.

What does not change between the three is the part that matters: the water is the same, the sand is the same, and the Natural Pool is in all of them.

And the 365 islands of the archipelago

You will have read that San Blas has “an island for every day of the year”. The real figure is around 365 formations, of which about 50 are inhabited and considerably fewer are set up to receive visitors.

So seeing “few” islands in a day is not a limitation of the tour: it is that most of the archipelago is either home to Guna communities that do not receive tourism, or sand cays with no shade where you cannot stop.

So how many should I choose?

Our honest recommendation: three. It is the point where the day feels complete without feeling rushed, and there is a reason it is the most booked package.
