Only 2 or 3 Days in Panama: Is There Time for San Blas?

Plenty of people pass through Panama on the way somewhere else: a long layover, a work trip with one free day, or a short holiday split between city and beach. The question comes up again and again: is there time for San Blas?

Yes. But which day you put it on changes the outcome a lot.

The full-day rule

The tour runs from 5am to 6 or 7pm. It is not half a day or “a morning at the beach”: it is the whole day. So the first decision is not whether there is time, but which of your days you give up.

With 3 days in Panama

The most comfortable scenario:

Day 1: arrival, Casco Antiguo, early night.
Day 2: San Blas.
Day 3: Panama Canal in the morning, flight in the afternoon or evening.

Putting San Blas in the middle works best. You arrive rested from the day before, and the following day acts as a buffer if the return runs late.

With 2 days

Here you have to choose. Our recommendation:

Day 1: San Blas.
Day 2: city and departure flight, always after midday.

Why San Blas first? Because if something goes wrong — rough sea, road closed after rain — you still have a day left. Put it on the last day and any delay eats into your flight.

With a long layover

If your layover is more than 24 hours and you land in the afternoon or evening, the next day’s tour fits. If it is twelve hours, it does not: there is not enough time even leaving straight from the airport, and pickup is at city hotels, not at Tocumen. Business trip with one free day

More common than you would think, and it works well on one condition: the free day should not be the one before an important meeting. You come back tired, sunburnt and with your clothes smelling of sea. If you need to be sharp the next morning, pick another plan.

If the free day is a Saturday or Sunday, perfect.

San Blas on your departure day. The request we turn down most often. The return depends on the sea and a mountain road: it is not a time we can guarantee. A missed flight costs far more than moving the tour by a day.

San Blas on your arrival day. Not possible: departure is at 5am from your city hotel.

Two long excursions back to back. If you are coming off another tour, leave a day in between. San Blas is tiring.

How to use the rest of your time

If San Blas takes a full day, the rest of Panama fits neatly into short blocks:

Half a day: Casco Antiguo on foot, with lunch.
Half a day: Miraflores or Agua Clara, to see the Canal.
Two hours: Cinta Costera at sunset, with the skyline view.
Half a day: Metropolitan Park, if you want jungle without leaving the city.

Two half-days cover the essentials of the city, and San Blas gives you what exists nowhere else in the country.

The most expensive calendar mistake

Wanting all of it. Panama has a city, a canal, the Caribbean and the Pacific, and three days will not hold them. Picking two things and doing them properly leaves a better memory than stringing five together badly.

If you can only pick one: the Canal takes three hours. San Blas needs the day. Decide which matters more and protect that day in your calendar.
