From Tocumen to San Blas: Planning Around Your Flight

It is one of the most common questions we get on WhatsApp: “I land at Tocumen at 11pm, can you pick me up for tomorrow’s tour?” The short answer is yes, but it helps to understand why the tour does not leave from the airport.

Why pickup is not at Tocumen

The transfer to Guna Yala is by 4x4 and starts before dawn, between 5:00 and 5:30. The route crosses the mountains on the Llano-Cartí road, which is narrow, steep and full of tight bends. It is not a drive you improvise halfway through.

The 4x4s run a pickup round through city hotels, in an order designed so nobody waits longer than necessary. Tocumen sits about 25 kilometres east of the centre, in the opposite direction from the exit towards the comarca. Adding the airport to that round would add nearly an hour for every passenger.

That is why pickup is at your hotel in Panama City, not at the terminal.

How much time you need between landing and the tour

The maths we go through with every client:

  • Landing and clearing the terminal: 45 to 90 minutes if you are arriving from abroad and going through immigration.
  • Tocumen to the centre: 30 to 45 minutes without traffic, over an hour at rush hour.
  • Rest: the tour starts at 5am. Sleeping less than five hours before a day of boats and sun is a bad idea, especially if you get seasick.

So the practical rule: if your flight lands before 8pm, the next day’s tour is perfectly workable. If it lands after midnight, we almost always suggest leaving a day in between. That is not us pushing another date; it is that the day is hard to enjoy on three hours of sleep.

The way back: do not book a flight that same night

This is the mistake that costs the most. The return to the city depends on two things we do not control: when the sea allows the boats to leave the islands, and the state of the mountain road.

On a normal day you are back at your hotel between 5 and 7pm. But if swell forces the boats to leave early or late, or there is a small landslide on the Llano-Cartí after rain, that time moves.

Our advice is firm: do not take an international flight on the same day as the tour. If there is no alternative, make it after 11pm and accept the risk. A missed flight costs far more than a hotel night.

What if my flight leaves at midday?

Then the tour does not fit. The full day runs from 5am to 6 or 7pm. If you fly at midday, the only option is to do the tour the day before.

What to do with your luggage

If you check out of your hotel on tour day and have nowhere to leave your suitcase, almost every city hotel stores luggage free of charge even after checkout. Ask the night before. You only take a small backpack to the islands.

Getting from the airport to your hotel

Three options, most to least comfortable:

  1. Official airport taxi: desk inside the terminal, fixed fare. Simplest if you arrive at night.
  2. Ride-hailing apps: they work at Tocumen, with a marked pickup point.
  3. Bus on the Corredor Sur: the cheap option, but not worth it with luggage before dawn.

In short

The airport and the tour are two separate things, and fitting them together is a matter of giving your calendar some room. Land the day before, sleep in the city, and leave your departure flight for the day after.

If you have your flight times to hand, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you in a minute which day works best. And if you already know, pick your day trip and book it — it takes a minute and only needs the deposit.
