Copa Airlines Stopover: Fitting In a San Blas Day Trip

Yes: a Copa Airlines stopover in Panama leaves room for a San Blas day trip, as long as the tour gets a full day to itself. Pickup is around 5:00 AM at your Panama City hotel and you’re back between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. In practice you need two nights: land on day one, do San Blas on day two, fly out on day three.

What Copa’s Panama Stopover is

Copa Airlines connects many of its routes through Tocumen airport. Its Panama Stopover program lets you break that connection and spend a few days in Panama before flying on. These are the conditions Copa publishes on its website (checked in October 2026):

  • One stopover in Panama with no additional airfare, as long as you request it when you buy the ticket. Add it after the ticket is issued and change fees and fare differences apply.
  • Panama’s entry and exit taxes are on you; Copa puts them at roughly US$50.
  • Length: Copa states a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 15 days, on the outbound or the return leg.
  • A second stopover (outbound and return) is possible if requested before ticketing, with a surcharge of up to US$250 plus taxes.

These are Copa’s rules, not ours, and they can change. Before you buy, read the stopover terms on copaair.com or ask Copa. We don’t sell flights: our part starts at your hotel door.

How many stopover nights do you need for San Blas?

StopoverEnough for San Blas? How to fit it in
1 nightWe don’t recommend itThe tour takes the whole next day and you’d have to fly out that same night
2 nightsYesDay 1 arrive, day 2 San Blas, day 3 fly
3 nightsIdealSan Blas on day 2; day 3 is your buffer and city day

If your stopover is two or three days and you also want to see the city and the Canal, only 2 or 3 days in Panama suggests how to split them.

Arrival day: the tour doesn’t leave from the airport

Pickup is at hotels in Panama City, not at Tocumen. The airport sits on the opposite side of the city from the road up to Guna Yala, and the 4x4 pickup round starts before dawn. So your arrival day doesn’t count: you land, check in and sleep.

If your flight lands very late, think about how many hours of sleep you’ll get before a 5:00 AM pickup. We go through it in detail in fitting the tour around your flight from Tocumen.

Your San Blas day

The day looks the same as for any other traveler:

  • Around 5:00 AM: 4x4 pickup at your hotel.
  • About 2 h 30 of winding mountain road to the port of Cartí. At the comarca’s entry checkpoint, foreigners show their passport.
  • Around 8:30 AM: boat to the first island.
  • Midday: typical lunch on an island (fish or chicken, rice, patacones and one drink).
  • Around 3:30 PM: last swim at the Piscina Natural.
  • Between 6:00 and 7:30 PM: back at your hotel.

Factor in the comarca tax: US$22 for foreigners, not included in the tour price, paid to the driver in cash or by card. For extras bring cash: there are no ATMs on the islands. What each route costs is on our day trip prices page.

Departure day: never the same day as the tour

The trip back depends on the sea and on a mountain road. On a normal day you’re at your hotel between 6:00 and 7:30 PM, but that’s not a time anyone can guarantee. So don’t book San Blas on the same day as a flight, not even a late-night one: the day trip belongs on a day with no airport at either end.

Where to stay during your stopover

Pick a hotel inside the pickup round and you avoid headaches. Casco Antiguo, Bella Vista, El Cangrejo and Punta Paitilla are covered at no extra cost; Panamá Oeste and the Pacific beaches are not. The full list is in which hotels and areas we pick you up from.

What if the sea doesn’t cooperate?

Rain alone doesn’t cancel the tour. The sea decides: the captain can change the route that morning and swap an island for a similar one. If the crossing isn’t safe and we call the trip off, you choose another date at no cost or a refund of what you paid.

This is where two nights and three nights differ: with three, if the tour has to move, you still have a day. And since you can cancel for free up to 72 hours before, you can book as soon as you have your ticket and adjust if Copa changes your flight.

Frequently asked questions

Is Copa’s Panama Stopover free? Copa says the stopover carries no additional airfare if you request it when buying the ticket, but you pay Panama’s entry and exit taxes, which Copa estimates at about US$50. Check the current conditions with Copa before you buy.

Can I do a San Blas day trip on a one-night stopover? We don’t recommend it. The tour takes the whole day, from 5:00 AM to between 6:00 and 7:30 PM, and you’d be flying out that same night after a return that depends on the sea and the road.

Can you pick me up at Tocumen airport? No. Pickup is at hotels in Panama City, around 5:00 AM. On the day you land you go to your hotel, and San Blas is the next day or later.

What do I need to bring on tour day? Your passport for the Guna Yala entry checkpoint, the comarca tax (US$22 for foreigners, cash or card) and a small backpack. Your suitcase stays at the hotel.
