Is a San Blas Day Trip Worth It? An Honest Verdict

Yes, for most travelers a San Blas day trip is worth it, as long as you know what kind of day you’re signing up for. You’re picked up at your Panama City hotel around 5:00 AM, spend about five hours on the road there and back, and return between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. In exchange you get around seven hours of islands, turquoise water, lunch on the sand and the Piscina Natural.

The verdict in one table

Worth it if…Not worth it if…
You have one free day and want to see the Guna Yala CaribbeanEarly starts or winding mountain roads ruin your day
Swimming, snorkeling and lunch on an island are enough for youYou want a slow day with no schedule
You’d rather sleep in your own hotel that nightYou need a restroom within reach at all times
You’re traveling as a couple, with friends or with familyYou have a flight that afternoon or evening
You’re fine with the captain swapping an island if the sea calls for itYou’ll only go if you see one specific island, no matter what

What it costs you in time

The day trip doesn’t start on the beach; it starts on the road. From Panama City it’s about two and a half hours by 4x4 over a mountain road with plenty of curves to the port of Cartí. Before the port there’s the comarca entry checkpoint, where foreigners show their passport. The boat leaves for the first island around 8:30 AM.

On the way back you repeat the drive, and the day runs past thirteen hours door to door. It isn’t hard, but it is long: an early night before, and nothing important on the evening of the tour. The drive is described in what the road to San Blas is like; if you get carsick, read how to avoid motion sickness on the way first.

What you get in return

  • About seven hours on the water. From the first island, around 8:30 AM, to the last swim at the Piscina Natural, around 3:30 PM.
  • Islands depending on your route. The Oferta Escapada covers 2 islands plus the Piscina Natural; most routes, 3; the Paquete VIP, 4 islands and a visit to a Guna community.
  • Water you actually use. Snorkel gear, kayaks and paddle boards on the islands.
  • Lunch on an island: fish or chicken, rice and patacones, with one drink.
  • A guide from the Guna community, who explains where you are: an autonomous indigenous territory with its own entry checkpoint.

If culture is what draws you most, the Guna Yala day tour puts the community at the center of the day.

What it costs you in money

The day trip starts at $114 with the Oferta Escapada; most routes are $135 and the Paquete VIP is $149. On top of that comes the comarca tax: $22 per foreigner and $7 per Panamanian or resident, with children aged 0 to 9 exempt. It’s paid the same day, in cash or by card to the driver.

That price covers the 4x4 door to door, the boat with life jackets, lunch, the guide and the islands on your route. On your own, you’d have to sort out the mountain transport, the boat and food yourself. Every route is compared on the prices page.

Who it’s not for, plainly

  • If you get badly carsick and won’t take anything. The curves go both ways, and then there’s the boat.
  • If you need a restroom close by at all times. The boat doesn’t have one; the toilets are on the islands.
  • If you’re expecting a beach club. The islands are sand, palm trees and water, with just what you need for the day.
  • If your flight leaves that same day. With a return between 6:00 and 7:30 PM, there’s no margin.

And if you’re after the night, the starry sky and sunrise on an island, a single day won’t give you that: that’s what staying overnight is for, and it’s a different trip.

How to make it worth it

  1. Choose the route for what matters to you. First time on a tight budget: the Oferta Escapada, the same full day with fewer stops. Only going once: the Paquete VIP, with a fourth island and the community.
  2. Get ready the night before: passport, cash for extras, swimsuit on and sunscreen. The full list is in what to bring to San Blas.
  3. Don’t book dinner before 8:30 PM. You come back tired and ready for a shower.
  4. Go without a fixed list of islands. The captain decides based on the sea, and a skipped island is replaced by a similar one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the early start worth it for a day in San Blas? For most people, yes. You’re picked up around 5:00 AM and back between 6:00 and 7:30 PM, but in between you get about seven hours of islands, snorkeling, lunch and the Piscina Natural.

How many hours of driving does the day trip involve? About two and a half hours each way, close to five in total, on a winding mountain road between Panama City and the port of Cartí.

Who is a San Blas day trip not recommended for? People who get badly carsick and won’t prevent it, anyone who needs a restroom nearby at all times, travelers expecting a beach club, and anyone flying out the same day.

What happens if the sea won’t allow a visit to an island? The captain can change the route depending on sea conditions, and a skipped island is replaced by a similar one. That’s why it’s best to go without a fixed list.
